Step #1: Make a list of your preferred universities

The first step into the application process is to find a set of universities that you would love to study in and has the courses that you want to explore. We always have a tendency to pick only the best universities in Germany in our field for our shortlist. But to increase your chances, always ensure that you also include a few great but less popular universities in your list as well.

Step #2: Find out more about your faculty

The people who will determine how good or bad your study in Germany experience will be is the university’s faculty. So, before you zero in on colleges also study the work of the instructors from the institution. If their work aligns with your interest, they will be able to provide you with better guidance during the duration of your course.

Step #3: Research the entry requirements and the process

Unlike the SATs in US or IIT-JEE exams in India, Germany does not have a centralized entrance examination for its universities. So, your application will be completely judged by some of the best universities in Germany where you apply.

But before you get started, check on DAAD if you are eligible to study in Germany. Secondly, check if your course has an admission restriction (or numerous clausus) nationally or at a local level. And finally, make sure you check whether your course needs a language proficiency test like TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF or DSH scores.

If you are stumbling anywhere through the process of understanding the requirements, always email your university beforehand to get a clearer idea.

Step #4: Write the perfect letter of motivation (LOM)

Since most top universities in Germany do not have interviews for admission, your letter of motivation (LOM) becomes their only source of understanding who you are as a person. So, make sure that you include the following points in your essay which shouldn’t exceed 1,000 words -

  1. Why did you choose to study in Germany?
  2. Why should the college consider you as a good candidate for their program?
  3. What are your goals after you graduate?
  4. How does your German education benefit your home country?

DAAD has a great guide on how you can write a good motivation letter for your admissions.

Step #5: Seek out great recommendation letters

While recommendation letters are not mandatory for all best universities in Germany, having a set of great letters from previous teachers or employers work as testimonials to your character and talent for the admission teams.

So, make sure that you ask for letters of recommendations from people who know you well in a professional or academic context and can attest to your capabilities.

Step #6: Stay updated on the timelines

Most top universities in Germany have admission deadlines for the Spring Semester on January 15 while the Winter semester deadlines are July 15. As non-EU and EEA students, you will need to submit your application on Uni-Assist 8 weeks before the deadline.

Some universities require you to submit preliminary review documents from Uni-Assist prior to the deadline, along with other documents. You must directly get in touch with the admissions office at the respective universities for further details in such cases.

Next Up

Once you have sent in your applications, most universities take 4 to 6 weeks to respond. During this period, take a breather to rest and relax. You can also start getting ready for your visa application procedure and begin your research on finding the best blocked account provider for you!
